Things to keep in mind:
1) SpamAssassin works on an individual mail box level - not at a domain level.
2) Can Set the "Point" level at which mail will be either flagged as spam or deleted (your option) for that mail box.
3) Default point level is 5 - Default Flag is SPAM (surrounded by brackets which don't post correctly in the forum) - You can change both.
4) Spam containing just a picture and no text is not flagged.
5) SA rules and flagging/deletion are only applied to incoming mail, not to outgoing mail.
6) Individual mail boxes can have their own white/black lists. 7) Each entry must be set up individually but can apply to all mail from a domain/sub domain via wildcard characters. No way to add a list with multiple entries.
8) By default Spam Assassin (SA) is turned off.
To Turn it on...
For Regular Mail Boxes:
1. Go to mail.yourdomain.com
. Click on the Spam Assassin Box. Enter the mailbox (e.g.
postmaster@yourdomain.com) and mail box password (transmitted in the clear). You'll be presented with a screen that allows you to turn SA on for that account. Turning it on will take you to the options page for SA.
2. Go to the Hsphere email section for the domain. Select the mail box and click on the SA link which will take yo to the SA login prompt as described in option 1.
NOTE that this option does not work for postmaster boxes. You'll have to use option 1 for them.
For Forwarded Addresses:
SA is not applied to incoming mail. Whatever rules exist for the destination email box are applied when the mail reaches that destination. Forwards go back into the mail queue and may count against your traffic (jury still out on this).
For Aliased Email Addresses:
SA is not applied to incoming mail. It is also not applied when the mail reaches the aliased destination.
The options for SA are very straight forward and well explained. Unsophisticated/dumb users could safely accept the defaults.
